ColonView Fecal Occult Blood tests
Detection of Fecal Occult Blood with ColonView Hb and Hb/Hp tests*
ColonView lateral flow tests are intended for simple detection of fecal occult blood (FOB) in stool samples. The detection of blood is based on highly sensitive immunochemical detection of hemoglobin or hemoglobin/haptoglobin complex. The principal use of the Biohit ColonView Hb and Hb/Hp tests is to screen for lower gastrointestinal (GI) pathologies, such as colorectal cancers and large adenomas that bleed.
Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and a leading cause of cancer mortality. Screening for colorectal cancer probably increases cancer detection at an early stage, therefore reducing the mortality. The ColonView tests are specially designed to detect human hemoglobin and hemoglobin/haptoglobin complex in stool samples using immunochemical method, with improved specificity for the detection of lower GI disorders, including colorectal cancers and adenomas.
Hemoglobin (Hb), the main component of red blood cells, is a protein that carries oxygen away from the lungs and carbon dioxide back to the lungs. Whole hemoglobin is detected by ColonView Hb test. However, Hb may fall apart in blood or during its passage through the colon. These molecules bind to serum protein called haptoglobin to form hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes, and are no longer detected by anti-hemoglobin assay alone.
ColonView Hb test is an ideal tool for colorectal cancer screening. Combination of the ColonView Hb test with the ColonView Hb/Hp test improves the detection of also large adenomatous polyps, which may develop into colorectal cancer. Their early detection and removal may prevent the development of colorectal cancer. To ensure the best detection of bleeding in the colorectal tract, ColonView Hb test should be used in combination wíth ColonView Hb/Hp test to detect hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes. Testing of 3 patient samples collected over 3 days gives the best result, as bleeding from tumors and adenomas may be intermittent.
ColonView Hb and Hb/Hp tests are provided with easy-to-use patient Sample Collection Kits that include all that is needed for convenient home sample collection, without the need to touch fecal samples. The same sample can be used for both Hb and Hb/Hp testing. ColonView Hb and Hb/Hp tests are simple, one-step lateral flow tests that give a result in 15 to 25 minutes.
